Dwi Pada Sirsasana

7 mins

This class introduces Dvi Pāda Śīrṣāsana (Two-Legs-Behind-Head Pose) as an extension of Eka Pāda, requiring both hips to participate equally. We begin from Daṇḍāsana or jump-through, taking the first leg only partway behind the head so there’s space to bring the second leg up. Both legs are then worked gradually—back, across, and duck—while keeping the chest lifted and spine long rather than collapsing. Props (wall, chair, blocks) are used to support the incremental pathway, but the focus is always on manual, active leg work: the legs rotate, hike, and gesture on their own before the arms assist. Students practice balancing upright with both legs hooked, sometimes supported by a blanket “ring” around the pelvis to stabilize. The essence is balance over bind: knees bent but spine lengthening, chest buoyant, and weight rooted in the seat. Exits explore transitions into Titibhāsana, Bakāsana, and jump-back, training proportionate lift and rhythm. Dvi Pāda is framed not as contortion but as a laboratory for hip mobility, intelligent sequencing, and cultivating steadiness in a highly demanding form. Model - Romain Prevost
