Gomukhasana Class 1

8 mins

This class explores Gomukhāsana (Cow-Face Pose) as a study in creating stability from instability. We begin with the deep crouch-and-leap entry, feet close together in a narrow, inherently wobbly seat. The challenge is to turn instability into stability by grounding the thighs, stabilizing the hips, and engaging the whole body. Props such as blocks or height under the pelvis can be used if the feet don’t come together easily. From here, students explore different arm positions: reaching overhead, interlacing fingers, or clasping around the knee. Variations include using a strap or tie for leverage, gradually lengthening the tail, lifting the navel, and broadening the chest. With arms fully extended, the pose becomes a powerful bandha laboratory, integrating Mūla, Uḍḍīyāna, and Jālandhara simultaneously. Special attention is given to the shoulder bind: instead of simply dropping the head back, place the arm fully behind the head, keep the ribs firm, and use the position to open the shoulder while preserving neutral pelvis. The exit is a compact Second Series vinyāsa—sucking the leg unit under and jumping back to Chaturanga—linking Gomukhāsana into the broader flow. Model - Delara Tiv (Ashtanga Vevey)
