Vatayanasana Class 2

8 mins

This class develops Vatayānāsana (Horse Pose) with stepwise support and upright balance. We begin by shaping the legs: one in Half Lotus (or cross-legged if Lotus isn’t available), the other turned out like a “frog leg,” grounding through the thighs to open the hips. Blocks are stacked under the knee for support, giving stability while students find their meditation seat. The rule: the further the Lotus foot is placed away, the easier it is to balance; walking it in deepens the challenge. From here, we train the upright stance—tail tucked, navel lifted, chest open—before adding arms. Variations include Namaste at the chest, arms raised vertically, arms open, or the classic intertwined bind. Each develops different shoulder and spine qualities while testing balance. Props like a wall, chair, or extra knee padding are encouraged so everyone can participate safely. The takeaway: Vatayānāsana isn’t about rushing into the full bind, but about researching balance in an unstable seat, opening the hips with support, and integrating arms and torso into a steady upright posture.
