In this combined talk and doing class, David introduces what he means by “drills” and why they are essential for Ashtanga students of every age and level. Drills are simple, repetitive strength exercises for arms, legs, abdomen, and buttocks that help you build a strong middle body and a reliable plank – your living danda – without grinding through endless, faulty Chaturangas. The first part of the session is a short talk where David lays out four core reasons to use drills: the real difficulty of Ashtanga (especially vinyasa), the principle “practice only what you want to reinforce,” the need for variety so the body does not break down from repetition, and the plain enjoyment of feeling strong and capable. The second part is guided practice. You will get on your mat and actually try several of the key drills with clear options, props, and different “stations” so you can find a level that fits your body. Drawing on the Hatha Yoga Pradipika image of yoga as a “supporting tortoise,” David shows how drills can become the supporting tortoise of your Hatha practice: adjustable, practical, and designed to protect you from the “triple heat” of practice while keeping your asana steady, comfortable, and sustainable over time.
